Chang Er

housands of years ago, there was a boy called Chang Er. He was very poor. He didn’t have money to
buy a house, clothes, or food. He was always hungry. He was skinny. He slept on the street. He was
cold. But, he was smart.
Shin
One day, the enemies of China killed the king. The king’s son, Hu Shin, became the king. But Hu
was a small boy. He didn’t know how to take care of China. So every time when China fought
with their enemies, the enemies always won. Soon, China became very weak.

Hu Shin became angry. So he said, “If someone will save China, I will let you be the king of China.”
Everyone heard it. Even Chang heard it. He thought for days and days. He spent all night thinking and
thinking. He thought for about one month. Suddenly, he had a good idea. He ran to the castle.
He said to the king, “I have a good idea.”
The king said, “I hope your idea is good. A lot of people came here. But I didn’t hear any good ideas.”
Chang said, “We could make a large wall to protect us.”
“
Oh yea. How could I not think of that?”
So the soldiers started to make a large wall. But only after 2 days ten people died. After ten days, about 50
people died. After 3 months only 1 soldier survived. So the Chinese people in China volunteered to make a large
wall. Even 5 year old children helped. Tons of people died.
Chang began to worry. Because he thought this was not a good idea. Chang prayed for people who died.
After 300 years, the large wall was finished. It was just like a gigantic dragon. The large wall covered down
across the deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus. It was 8,852 kilometers (5,500miles). It started at 1368-
1644.
It was the longest fortification ever built. Chang was kind of happy, kind of sad because a lot of people
died. Luckily, the enemies didn’t come.
Chang said to the kind, “Could I be the king?” The king didn’t want Chang to be a king. The king wanted
himself to be a king.
He said, “No!”
Chang was surprised.
“
Why? You promised!”
The Chinese people want Chang to be a king. Because the king was mean to the Chinese people. So the
Chinese people planned how to let Chang be a king. The Chinese people all went to the castle. They all shouted
at the king. The king became afraid. He ran out from the castle. Chang thanked the Chinese people.
Chang became the king of China.
Next day, Chang and the Chinese people had a big party. The Chinese people danced, sang and ate. They
ate moonbeams, dumplings, sweet rice balls and other yummy things. And Chang and the Chinese people called
the large wall, “Great Wall of China.” Chang gave some money to poor people and he helped the poor people.
